Domenico Busan Double Bass Copy, Budapest circa 2001

Domenico Busan Double Bass Copy, Budapest circa 2001

Sold

This imposing full sized double bass has been inspired by the renowned Venetian luthier Domenico Busan (b-c1720, d-1783). The model features the violin outline with flat back and angle break that one associates with his double basses. It also has the typical broad upper and lower bouts, a fully-arched table, fairly upright F-holes and pronounced edging on the table. On the lower back you will notice that the maker has taken a considerable amount of time and trouble to copy the carving-in-relief of the wave-like decorative or possibly protective caving that is characteristic of a real Busan. Similarly, he has reproduced the undulating decorative shield just below the back button within which he has carved the words and date “R 1927 Budapest OP 4 M”.

Although we are quite sure that the instrument doesn’t date from the mid-eighteenth century or even the inscribed 1927 date, we really like the fact that the maker has tried hard to make the instrument look much, much older than it really is by reproducing age related bumps, scratch, wear and even stain markings. We also like the fact that this well-made instrument has an absolutely massive sound on all four strings and in all positions.

Presented with a wonderful slim-feel neck, a smooth-turning set of Rubner cogs, a Despieu bridge and a compensated tailpiece, this instrument will definitely appeal to a great many players.
